Making festive 4th of July recipes and snacks for family and friends is easy when you shop at Family Dollar. With just a few items, you can put together an impressive display of treats everyone will love. The secret is to take a favorite recipe and twist it with some fun variations. It makes for a beautiful presentation with very little extra work.
Try it with Rice Krispie Treats for the 4th of July! Using the basic recipe printed right on the box and a little food coloring, you can make four easy 4th of July recipes in one!
Grab a box of Rice Krispies, some marshmallows, butter and powdered sugar at Family Dollar. Pick up a can of cherry pie filling, some white frosting and Funfetti blue cupcake mix too.
Layered Rice Krispies Treats - Because you're making three different colored layers, you'll need to make 1/3 of the recipe at a time.
Melt 1 tablespoon butter and about 10-12 marshmallows in a saucepan on the stove. When the marshmallows have melted, drop in some blue food coloring and stir in. Add as much or as little as you'd like to get the color you prefer. Mix 2 cups Rice Krispies into the marshmallow mix and press into greased baking pan.
Repeat this in a separate saucepan without using any food coloring to make the white layer. Press that over the top of the blue layer. Finally, do the same thing using red food coloring, and press in place over the white layer. Now you have red, white and blue treats!
Note: To make all four variations without having to make the recipe twice, make a smaller pan of layered treats. The remaining marshmallow cereal mix can be used for the other recipe twists.
Glaze-drizzled Stars - Use a cookie cutter to cut star shapes from the bars. You can make them in single colors or layered with all three colors. Drizzle powdered sugar glaze over the top and let harden before stacking. You can also add colored sprinkles or sugars, if you'd like.
Iced Rice Krispy Balls - Form rounded balls with the marshmallow rice mixture and then roll in the powdered sugar glaze. Sprinkle decorations or colored sugar on top and let sit to harden.
Tie-Dye Mini Muffin Treats - Take bits of each color rice mixture and press them all together into greased mini muffin tins to shape. Place them in mini paper liners to serve.
I also made cupcakes because I couldn't resist the Funfetti aqua blue color. It's perfect for the 4th! Frost each cupcake with white icing and spoon cherry pie filling cherry on top. Now you have red, white and blue cupcakes!
Here's another idea: When putting the batter in the cupcake tins, partially fill the cups, spoon in some cherry pie filling and then finish with the remaining amount. The finished cupcakes will hide the special 4th of July surprise inside!
So there you have it - a whole slew of 4th of July recipe ideas using inexpensive ingredients from Family Dollar, and in less than an hour, you can make them all!
Happy 4th of July!
